The only time things change, and I mean _really_ change, is when there's a major hardware shift. Not a change of controller, kempston to quickshot 2 anyone? Well, the autofire button _was_ sweet but… The size and cost of the early consoles, commodores and spectrums was a transformation along with cheap colour tvs. The creation of the playstation 1 and the 3D graphics cards were another game changer taking games from mostly 2D to mostly 3D. Now, people are playing around as you say, fiddling here and there, but I totally agree with you, it's just not that interesting despite the hype.

Real 3D "holographic" screens _will_ be another game changer. Proper immersive non-vomit-inducing headmounted displays and haptic exoskeletons will completely blow us away. Anything else, irrespective of novelty value, will simply be more of the same pseudo 3D shown on fixed 2D screens, probably just a bit more knackering.

Haven't talked (presses X) about it yet because I (presses square) haven't got a copy. Lovefilm sent (presses X) me my rental yesterday, so hopefully I'll (presses circle) have some stuff to say about it pretty soon.

Only tangentially related, but I'm surprised I haven't seen you talk about Heavy Rain yet given the types of things you usually have to say about game narratives. I'd be interested in seeing your take.

Not only that, I'm told Windows 7 was My Idea.

Still haven't had any royalties through from it yet.

I'm harsh on the iPhone only because I've always had a lousy experience playing games on it - even the ones people agree are pretty good. The most fun I've had with it was Crush The Castle, a one-tap affair based on a Flash game. Which was okay, but short. For everything else, the size of the screen, the sensitivity of the controls, the finger thing, it all just gets in the way of my fun.

Certainly not saying other people can't have a good time with them. It's just not the device for me, in much the same way that I didn't get on with the N64 or PSP control systems. Or indeed, systems.

I love your "uncanny valley of interaction" idea, and in general I agree, but I think you're too harsh on the iPhone.

Specifically, street fighter has always had gesture recognition, it's just that the half-circle you're now tracing is done with a finger, not a dpad. I was sceptical at first too, but it works really well.
